BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey men's basketball team hosted Emmanuel in Conference Carolinas play Saturday night at the Wheeler Center. It was the first meeting since the two teams met in the Southeast Regional Semifinal in the NCAA Tournament in March.
It took an extra 10 minutes to decide the game that ended with Emmanuel holding on for an 84-79 double overtime victory over The Abbey. It was the first time that the Crusaders had played a double overtime game since Jan. 5, 2016 against Southern Wesleyan.
Sean Halloran led The Abbey with 18 points with three assists and two steals.
The Crusaders moved to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in Conference Carolinas action while Emmanuel is now 7-2 and 6-0 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first half was a back and forth battle with neither side leading by more than five points. After falling behind 12-7 in the first half, the Crusaders charged ahead with a 7-2 run to take a 14-13 lead. The run was capped off with a 3-pointer by Ryan Maslow.
- The Abbey rallied once again late in the first half, scoring eight of the final 11 points of the half to take a 29-28 lead into the locker room.
- Mario Lacy, Jr. accounted for six of the first eight points of the second half for the Crusaders. Lacy recorded his third double-double of the season and ninth of his career with for 15 points and 11 rebounds.
- Prince Davies delivered eight straight points as part of a 10-2 run to give Belmont Abbey a 53-46 lead midway through the second half. Davies finished with a season-high 12 points and finished with his second straight game in double figures scoring.
- Belmont Abbey finished with a 42-31 rebounding advantage over Emmanuel.
- Halloran, Lacy and Davies accounted for 10 of the 12 points across both overtimes.
- The Crusaders had three players finish with seven or more boards.
- The Abbey recorded eight steals for the second straight game.
