BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team started Conference Carolinas play on a good note by pulling away for a 68-54 victory over the North Greenville Crusaders Saturday at the Wheeler Center.
Peyton Nation had the best night of her collegiate career for The Abbey, finishing with a game-high 20 points on 8 of 9 shooting off the bench.
Belmont Abbey moved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play while North Greenville is now 0-4 and 0-1, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Alexis Schulz tallied a 14 points to go with six assists and four rebounds in her first game action of the season.
- Kelli Thomas and Sydni Addison made their first starts of the season for Belmont Abbey. Thomas finished with eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
- The first quarter featured five lead changes as Belmont Abbey trailed 13-11 through the first 10 minutes.
- A 3-pointer by Schulz with 8:16 left in the second quarter gave Belmont Abbey a 16-13 and it would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game.
- The Abbey scored the first 12 points of the second quarter and held North Greenville scoreless for the first five minutes of the period.
- Belmont Abbey used that to lift it to a 31-25 halftime lead. Belmont Abbey closed the third quarter on a 15-6 run, including a 3-pointer from Abigail Crain as time expired to give The Abbey a 55-44 lead.
- Belmont Abbey made all five of their 3-pointers in the second half and finished with a season-best 59.1% from the field.
- The Abbey also had 22 assists, including five each from Jo Snow and Taylor Stelley.
