CENTRAL, S.C. –
Alexis Schulz led 12 Crusaders who scored this evening, as the Belmont Abbey women's basketball team cruised to a 87-55 win over Southern Wesleyan this evening. The victory puts The Abbey at 6-2 on the season, with a 2-1 Conference Carolinas mark. The Warriors are now 1-2 overall and in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The teams traded the lead early, but a layup by Kelli Thomas with two minutes to go in the opening period gave The Abbey the lead for good. The Crusaders held a 23-16 advantage at halftime
- The Crusader defense was stellar in the second, giving up just three field goals in the period, and only one in the last 6:50 of the quarter
- Taylor Stelley scored ten points in the period, and Belmont Abbey led 55-24 at halftime
- In the third, the Crusader defense was again very strong, giving up just one field goal over the first six minutes of the quarter. The Abbey also opened the period on an 11-2 run
- A layup from Sydni Addison closed out the quarter, and BAC held a 72-40 lead heading into the final period
- Shelby Darden scored eight points in the fourth to help Belmont Abbey close out the 87-55 victory
- On the night, Schulz led the Crusaders with 14 points
- As a unit, Belmont Abbey shot 35-56 from the field, for a 62.5 FG percentage
