Box Score 2 BELMONT, N.C. -- Katie Allison and Evann Shelnutt each had three hits, but Belmont Abbey dropped a pair of one-run games to Augusta in non-conference softball action Saturday. The Jaguars won the opener 1-0 before scratching out a 7-6 decision in eight innings in the nightcap.
The Crusaders fall to 2-10 on the season, while Augusta improves to 3-11.
THE OPENER
- The first four hitters in the lineup -- Melissa Neyhouse, Katie Allison, Payton Whitley and Morgan Smith -- each had hits. Freshman Jazmeen Freeman registered her first collegiate among the Crusaders' five in the contest.
- Annabeth Watkins suffered the hard-luck loss to fall to 1-5. In her best outing of the season, she allowed just two hits and two walks, while striking out six.
- Augusta scored the only run of the contest in the fifth on two-out single after a leadoff walk and sacrifice.
THE NIGHTCAP
- Shelnutt, also a freshman, tallied a career-high three hits. She was one of four players with multiple hits.
- Allison, Alexis Rogers and Sydney Fields each had two hits and drove in a run. Fields hit a solo home run.
- Whitley had a two-run homer as part of a four-run fifth.
- Belmont Abbey fell behind 4-0 in the second on an RBI single and three-run home run.
- The Crusaders cut the margin in half over the next two innings. Allison drove in a run on a groundout in the third, then Fields cleared the left-field fence in the fourth.
- After Augusta tacked on a run in the fourth, The Abbey took a 6-5 lead with a four-run fifth. Whitley's two-run blast to center cut the margin to one before Shelnutt tied the game with an RBI single. Rogers singled later in the inning for a second unearned run that put the Crusaders ahead.
- Augusta tied the game in the fifth before an RBI single in first extra frame ended the contest.
- Watkins also took the loss in game two, allowing just one run in 2.1 innings of relief.
