Second-Half Surge Lifts Crusaders to 105-80 Victory

CENTRAL, S.C. -- Belmont Abbey used its biggest second-half of the season -- 69 points -- to break open a close game and cruise to a 105-80 victory at Southern Wesleyan in Conference Carolinas men's basketball action Saturday afternoon. DeQuan Abrom led the offensive attack with 33 points, including 23 after intermission.

With its fourth straight win, The Abbey improves to 16-9 overall and 11-6 in league play. Southern Wesleyan is now 15-10, 11-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Abrom hit 13 of 20 from the field (four of seven threes) and all three free throws for his third straight game (ninth this season) with 30+ points.
  • Romeao Ferguson tallied 20 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out a team-high seven assists, while Sean Halloran chipped in 19 points, four rebounds and four assists.
  • After holding a 36-34 lead at the break, The Abbey was up just one, 38-37 when it scored nine straight points to push the margin to double digits, 47-37.
  • An 11-4 spurt later sent the difference to 20, 81-61, culminating with a Halloran three-point play with 8:32 left. 
  • The second-half shooting percentage was 71.8 (28 of 39).
  • The Abbey connected on 62.7 percent from the field, the seventh time this year posting a total over 60 percent. The Crusaders have also reached the mark in four straight outings.
  • The Crusaders held a 34-28 rebounding advantage and had two fewer turnovers (15-17).
  • Abrom passed Richard Barbee and Tyshawn Good for fourth place on the school's all-time scoring list with 2,036 points. His 658 points rank fourth on the single-season chart. The senior was named to the Bevo Francis Award Top 50 Watch List on Saturday.
