Box Score 2 BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Claire Doyle and Cameron Cooper each recorded three hits but King took both ends of a Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader from Belmont Abbey Friday afternoon. The Tornado won the opened 5-0 before capturing the nightcap 6-2.
With the results, the Crusaders fall to 15-19, 5-9, while the Tornado improve to 23-14, 10-4.
GAME ONE
- Doyle had three hits in three at-bats to lead the offensive attack.
- Morgan Smith doubled, while Cooper and Melissa Neyhouse each had singles.
- King plated all five of its runs in the third inning, using a pair of home runs to plate three. An RBI single and bases-loaded walk finished the scoring.
- Annabeth Watkins (8-9) took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) in 2.1 innings pitched. She gave up six hits and walked two, while striking out one.
- Jordanna Shorts pitched 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing four hits and a walk.
- Rachel Farmer earned the complete-game win for the Tornado, scattering six hits and a pair of walks. She struck out two.
GAME TWO
- Cooper went 2-for-3 with her second home run of the season, while Payton Whitley also had a pair of hits.
- Brianna Embler double with Smith and Neyhouse rounding out the seven-hit effort.
- King jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the second and another in the third, but Belmont Abbey closed the gap with an RBI groundout by Minona Hardin in the fourth.
- However, the Tornado answered with two runs in its half of the fourth and added an insurance home run in the sixth to push the lead to 6-1.
- Cooper's home run in the seventh capped the scoring.
- Ivorie Maltby fell to 5-8 with the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) in 3.1 innings. She walked three and struck out two.
- Shorts pitched the final 2.2 innings, giving up a run on three hits. She also fanned two.
- Casey Gilbert (9-4) earned the win, striking out seven in the complete-game effort.
