Crusaders Upset King in Opening Round

BURLINGTON, N.C. – The seventh-seeded Belmont Abbey Crusaders upset the second-seeded King Tornado in the first- round of the Conference Carolinas softball tournament Friday. The Crusaders (21-20)) outhit the Tornado (28-20) 9-7, scoring three runs in the second inning.

Highlights

Claire Doyle went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Abbey opened the scoring in the second inning when Melissa Neyhouse singled to right to Score Hailey Gass.

Payton Whitley kept the second inning rally going with a two-RBI single up the middle.

Claire Doyle doubled in a run in the fourth and later scored on Morgan Smith's single.

Annabeth Watkins earned her 11th win of the season pitching 5.0 innings allowing two runs and struck out three.

Ivorie Maltby earned her first save, pitching the last two innings striking out three.

The Crusaders will play Southern Wesleyan tonight at 9 PM in the winners' bracket.
