Box Score GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team advanced to the Conference Carolinas Championship after defeating the seventh-seeded Barton Bulldogs in the semifinals Friday night. The game took penalty kicks following the two overtime periods to determine the winner as the Crusaders (13-3-1) won 3-1 in the penalty kick segment.
How it Happened
- Morgan Patton gave the Crusaders the lead in the 17th minute as a fast break shot was saved by the Barton keeper but Patton collected her rebound and recorded the score
- Belmont Abbey took the 1-0 lead into halftime
- Barton was able to equalize the match in the second half, capitalizing on a penalty kick that was awarded after a foul that took place inside the box
- At the end of regulation, the game was knotted at one
- Through the overtime periods, the Crusaders held a 15-10 shot advantage
- Crusader keeper Lauryn Harding recorded four saves, while Barton managed eight
Penalty Kicks
- Barton missed their first two kicks with Belmont Abbey putting in their first two as Sydney Pluhacek and Emma Ruppert both answered the call
- Barton was able to connect on their third kick but The Abbey responded when Allyson Elliot sent in her shot
- Harding came up with a spectacular diving save on Barton's fourth penalty kick to seal the win for The Abbey
