Crusaders Rally Late for 2-1 Victory at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Belmont Abbey rallied from a 1-0 deficit with two late goals, then hung on to defeat Newberry 2-1 in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Field Hockey League action Tuesday night. With the victory, the Crusaders (4-8, 4-4) inched closer to a berth in the league tournament, needing only win or loss by Converse to qualify.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The teams played a scoreless first half with Belmont Abbey holding a 6-1 advantage in shots.
  • Newberry tallied the first goal on a shot with 19:01 remaining.
  • With just over 10 minutes left Angelina Perrone connected on a long pass to Mia Maminski, who went far post to tie the game.
  • Just under five minutes later, Emilie Devaux converted on a penalty corner from Xanthe Rademeyer to secure the victory.
  • Belmont Abbey outshot the Wolves 24-3 and had an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners.
