Box Score BELMONT, N.C. -- Demetria Barrow broke a 1-1 tie with 15 seconds left in the first half and Belmont Abbey hung on to earn a 2-1 victory in field hockey action Wednesday at Alumni Field. With the result, the Crusaders improved to 3-0, setting a new school record for consecutive victories and equalling their win total in last year's inaugural season.
Barrow took a feed from Marissa Olmos in the center of the circle and spun around for the game-winning shot, answering a Newberry goal just 2:06 earlier. Kayley Williams had opened the scoring by converting a perfect cross from Madison Ensley at the 28:10 mark of the opening period.
In the second half, Paige Hinds saved the only shot on goal she faced and the Crusaders survived 11 minutes of being a man down after four cards.
Belmont Abbey outshot the Wolves 6-4 overall and had the same advantage in penalty corners.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday at 10 a.m., when they host Converse, a team they defeated 2-1 on the road Monday night.
