BELMONT, N.C. -- Mackenzie Chrapliwy tallied a double-double of 13 kills and 12 digs and Sarah Kenney added 10 digs, but it was not enough as Barton held off Belmont Abbey in a hard-fought 3-0 (25-20, 28-26, 25-11) women's volleyball decision Friday night.

The Crusaders (7-6, 3-2) hit just .128 as a team, but the Bulldogs struggled as well in the category, totaling just .157. The Abbey had just one service ace, while committing eight errors on serves.

In the opening set, Belmont Abbey led 7-6, but Barton ran off five consecutive points for an 11-7 lead. The Bulldogs stretched the margin to five on several occasions, before the Crusaders closed to within three at 21-18 and 22-19. But a service error switched the momentum and Barton took the first set, 25-20.

The Abbey trailed 7-5 in the second set, but rattled off five in a row to gain its first lead of the contest. A 4-0 run by Barton made the score 11-10, but three straight by the Crusaders flipped the lead again at 13-11. Belmont Abbey led 18-17 when the Bulldogs used three straight points for a 20-17, but the Crusaders closed to within 22-21. Three straight points put The Abbey on the verge of taking the set, but the preseason favorites rallied. They fought off three set points, then scored three in a row after trailing 26-26 to take the set.

In the third set, Barton scored the first three points en route to a 10-5 lead. Belmont Abbey rallied to tie the game at 16, 17 and 18, but could never take the lead. The Bulldogs got a service error and attack error to go up 20-18, then answered a Crusader point with two more. Back-to-back kills ended the set 25-21.

Belmont Abbey returns to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Mount Olive as part of Homecoming Weekend.
