Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team opened their season with a 4-0 shutout over Newberry Friday night. The Crusaders benefitted from four different goal scorers along with a stellar performance from keeper Wes Holifield to secure the first victory of the season.
The Abbey jumped out to the early lead just under seven minutes in the contest as Juan Villa found the back of the net for the first goal of the year. Senior Patrick Kibler ripped a free kick, just outside the 18, in the 33rd minute to give the Crusaders the two goal advantage going into the half.
Belmont Abbey controlled the ball for most of the second half before Aaron Madison crushed a perfectly placed ball, just out of reach of the keeper, from 40 yards out. The Abbey added to their lead just two minutes later as Mark Trompeter beat the keeper for the final goal of the night.
