BELMONT, N.C. -- Kayley Williams scored the third hat trick in Belmont Abbey field hockey history and Demetria Barrow added two goals, leading the Crusaders to a 5-3 victory over Queens Wednesday afternoon. The victory was the first in four meetings against the crosstown rivals.

Williams opened the scoring on a 2-on-1 breakaway at the 14:39 mark, taking a pass from Angelina Perrone. She struck again just under six minutes later when she rebounded a shot of her own that clanked off the post.

Queens (3-7) cut the deficit in half on an unassisted goal by Jill Sherman at 27:03, leaving the score 2-1 at intermission. Williams tallied her seventh goal of the season, and third of the game, just 1:21 into the second stanza when she received a cross-goal pass from Barrow at the right post and tapped it in.

The lead stood at 3-1 until a flurry of goals by both teams midway through the period. Queens' Korey Fine struck at 55:31 but Barrow took a pass from Williams and scored just 92 seconds later to extend the lead to 4-2. But on the restart after 22 seconds, Mazvita Mtisi broke free to pull the Royals back with one, 4-3 at the 57:22 mark.

The Crusaders did not lose their composure and added some insurance with 6:01 remaining. Perrone drove deep into the crease on the left side and found Barrow all alone on the right side for the final tally.

Belmont Abbey returns to action on Monday when it hosts Molloy. Start time is 3 p.m.
