Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. -- Kayley Williams tied the school record with her 10th goal of the season, but it was not enough as Newberry claimed a 3-1 victory Friday night in a key ECAC Division II Field Hockey League matchup. The Crusaders fall a half game behind the Wolves for the final tournament spot with the setback.
Newberry (6-8, 3-4) opened a 1-0 lead at the 14:34 mark of the contest when it knocked in a rebound off a penalty corner. The score remained that way until early in the second half when Williams banged in a rebound of her own shot during its own penalty corner sequence. The goal 7:29 into the period came on the third attempt, following a shot by Demetria Barrow attempt.
But the Wolves answered just 53 seconds later to retake the lead on a one-on-one breakaway. They tacked on some insurance at the 58:57 mark on a penalty stroke, the first ever against the Crusaders.
Belmont Abbey (7-5, 2-4) outshot the Newberry 14-10 overall and 10-5 in the second half. The Crusaders also held the edge in penalty corners, 12-6 (9-1 after intermission).
The Crusaders will play their final home game on the 2017 season on Tuesday when it welcomes ECAC leader Limestone to Alumni Field.
