Box Score

Meghan Philp and Cierra Skyers each scored two goals and freshman Kate Hennessy netted her first career marker as the Belmont Abbey women's soccer team surged past Emmanuel 5-0 this afternoon at Alumni Field. The Crusaders recorded their fourth shutout in the past five matches to improve to 4-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the league, while Emmanuel drops to 2-5-0 overall and 2-3-0 in league play.

Belmont Abbey controlled the match from the opening whistle as it outshot Emmanuel 24-1. The Lions only shot came in the 71st minute.

Philp gave the Crusaders the only goal they would need in the 19th minute as Skyers outran two defenders down the left touchline, powered past another defender on the goal line and slid a cross to the waiting feet of Philp, who one timed an easy tap into the lower right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.

A mere four minutes later, Skyers made it 2-0 as she fired home a penalty kick after being pulled down in the box from behind.

That was all of the scoring for the first half, as the Abbey outshot the visitors 13-0 in the period.

The offensive surge remained strong in the final 45 minutes as the Abbey scored three times on 11 shots.

The first goal came in the 53rd minute as Skyers recorded her third multi-goal match of the year. Racing down the right touch line, Skyers beat a defender and raced to the end line, and let fly a tough shot from a tight angle, beating the keeper for her sixth goal of the season and increasing the lead to 3-0.

12 minutes later, Hennessy recorded her first career goal, slamming home a Brooke Hedgspeth cross from the right side to make the lead 4-0.

Philp closed the scoring three minutes later, tapping home a saved Hennessy shot for her fifth goal of the year.

Along with the shots differential, the Crusaders attempted four corner kicks to just one for Emmanuel. Megan Bowen did not make a save in the first half, and Kaelyn O'Hop did not record one either as she played the final 45 minutes.

Belmont Abbey is back in action Wednesday at 3:00 when welcoming King to Alumni Field.
