Box Score

Meghan Philp and Cierra Skyers both scored two goals, with Philp adding an assist, as the Belmont Abbey women's soccer team rolled past Lander 5-0 this afternoon at Alumni Field in a Southeast Region contest. Belmont Abbey posts its second-straight shutout as the Crusaders improve to 2-1-1, while Lander falls to 1-2-0.

Belmont Abbey dominated from start to finish, outshooting the Bearcats 28-9 and attempting six corner kicks to just three for Lander.

Philp gave the Abbey the only goal it would need in the 11th minute as she banged home a rebound from the left side and snuck it under the hands of goalkeeper Megan Wiley for a 1-0 lead.

A mere three minutes later, Philp and Skyers connected on the second goal, as Skyers headed home a Philp cross from the center of the box for her first goal of the match.

The Crusaders added another in the first as Kate Hennessy netted her first career goal, tapping in a heel flick from Kooba Richard in the 30th minute for a 3-0 lead. Belmont Abbey outshot Lander 10-4 in the opening 45 minutes.

The offensive surge continued in the second half as the Crusaders tacked on two more, with goals from Philp and Skyers, coming just eight minutes apart.

It started in the 72nd minute, as Philp, who was unmarked, easily headed home a Laura Shelton cross from the center of the box to notch her second goal of the match and increase the Abbey's lead to 4-0.

Skyers closed the scoring in the 80th minute with an unassisted tally, fighting off two defenders just from the left of the face of goal and beat Wiley with a shot to the near post for a 5-0 lead, which was the final.

Belmont Abbey had one brilliant chance late to add a sixth goal, as Rachel Lambert fired a shot from 20 yards that banged off the crossbar. Richard one timed the rebound and the ball was destined for the upper left corner, but Wiley made a diving save.

Megan Bowen tended goal for the first half and made one save. Kaelyn O'Hop stopped two shots in the second half.

The Crusaders are off for one week and will open conference play Saturday at Mount Olive. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
