11/7/2015 12:00:00 AM

Box Score

Limestone defender Millie Shaw scored the only goal of the match in the 71st minute and the Saints held off a surging Belmont Abbey offense to claim a 1-0 win to capture their first Conference Carolinas Championship this afternoon at Saints Field. Limestone is now 16-3 as it earns the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Belmont Abbey, which was ranked sixth regionally in the latest rankings, is now 16-3-1 and hopeful for an at large berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Today's match was originally scheduled to be played at Belmont Abbey's Alumni Field, but the recent inclement weather deemed the pitch unplayable and the match was moved to Saints Field.

Belmont Abbey outshot Limestone 16-8 and attempted five corner kicks to just one for the Saints, but it was Limestone that scored the only goal of the match in the 71st minute.

Shaw gained possession down the right side and from 25 yards out, let fly a left footed shot to the far post, sailing it over the outstretched arm of Megan Bowen and landing just inside the left post for a 1-0 lead.

The Crusaders, which controlled first half possession, upped the pressure after going down a goal, but the Saints held off the charge to earn the 1-0 victory.

Seniors Meghan Philp, Jillian Lang and Laura Shelton were named to the all-tournament team.
