Box Score

The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team closed the 2015 home and regular season schedule with a 2-1 loss to the visiting Limestone Saints this afternoon at Alumni Field. Belmont Abbey used a strong flurry late in the match but could not get level after senior Declan McQuillan cut the Saints lead to 2-1 in the 83rd minute.

Limestone improves to 13-3-0 overall and finishes the Conference Carolinas season with a mark of 9-1. The Saints will be the second seed in next week's Conference Tournament. Belmont Abbey finishes the regular season with a record of 3-10-3 overall and 2-6-2 in Conference Carolinas.

After a scoreless first half, Limestone broke through with the first two goals of the match, the first in the 56th minute as Jorge Salvat netted an unassisted marker. Four minutes later, he garnered an assist as he sent a cross to Harry Cooksley, who beat Luke Whelan with a shot to the right side of the net pushed the lead to 2-0.

The Crusaders, which had increased pressure for the entire second half, finally broke through in the 83rd minute as Mark Trompeter slid a pass to McQuillan at the top of the box. McQuillan one timed the pass to the far post, powering a low shot to the left corner to cut the Limestone lead to 2-1.

Two minutes later, Trompeter nearly gained the equalizer as his shot was deflected by a Saints defender and nearly trickled into the goal, but it bounced just wide.

Limestone outshot the Abbey 20-3 and held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.

Belmont Abbey will open the Conference Carolinas Tournament Tuesday on the road. Opponent and time will be determined later.
