Box Score 2 The Belmont Abbey softball team dropped both of its games at Francis Marion this afternoon in the 2014 season-opening doubleheader. The Crusaders suffered a 10-0 loss in five innings in game one, and lost game two by a score of 5-0. 13 of Francis Marion's 15 runs were unearned.
In the opener, the Patriots scored eight times in the third inning to open up a 9-0 lead. Francis Marion scored once in the first-on a homer to left-and tacked on another in the fourth.
Taylor Luff picked up the win after going the distance, tossing a no hitter and striking out 12. Samantha Jacobs was charged with the loss. She gave up nine runs, only one earned, with a strikeout.
In the nightcap, Francis Marion scored two in the first and tacked one four more in the third, three coming on a homer by Taylor Barrineau, the sister of Abbey outfielder Courtney Barrineau.
The Crusaders finished with two hits, coming on a singles by Nikki Faust and Shannon Cardillo.
Katie Carnes moved her record to 1-0 in the victory, allowing just two hits and striking out ten in a complete game effort.
Catelyn Presley allowed five runs, only one earned, in five innings to take the loss.
