Softball Swept At Barton, 10-0 & 14-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

When the Crusaders softball team stepped off the bus to play the Barton College Bulldogs in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader, wind chill was around freezing. As snow flurries swirled inside Jeffries Field, cold would become a recurring theme for the Crusaders. At days end, the Crusaders bats would be equally unseasonably cold, mustering just two hits in losing a twinbill sweep to the Bulldogs, 10-0 and 14-0, both in five innings.

Liz White spun a five inning no hitter, her first collegiate no hitter, against a Crusaders club that came in riding a four game winning streak, outscoring its opponents 37-6. White allowed one runner into scoring position in the first, but the Crusaders were unable to strike score. Barton would give the freshman right hander all the margin she would need with a six run opening frame off her freshman counterpart Samantha Jacobs. The Bulldogs plated four in the third to wrap up the scoring in game one. White would take care of the rest to earn her second win of the season. On the day, White struck out seven and walked two.

In the second game, Hannah Bright singled to left in the top of the first to break up any thoughts of a repeat performance. However, that rally was thwarted when Bright was doubled up on a hit-and-run that went awry. Barton would tally runs in each of the four times they came to bat, with eight Bulldogs crossing home in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Catelyn Pressley took the loss in game two, allowing only two earned runs. Pressley was the victim of seven unearned runs that led to an early departure in the finale.

On the day, White would have a pair of multi-hit games to go with four RBI, as well as an inside-the-park home run. Emily Leagon collected a pair of muti-hit games as well. Bright and Carol-Anne Sherrill reached safely in game two for the only hits of the day.

The Crusaders begin a four game homestand this weekend against West Virginia State (DH) on Saturday and Queens (DH) on Sunday. First pitch time Saturday is slated for 1:30pm.
