The Belmont Abbey softball team rapped out 25 runs on 26 hits in
a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Edinboro Fighting Scots, as
the Crusaders ran their winning streak to four with wins by scores
of 16-2 and 9-0, both in five innings, this afternoon at Crusader
Field. Belmont Abbey improves its record to 8-14, while Edinboro
drops to 2-5.
In the opener, the Crusaders led 2-0 after one but blew the game
wide open with a ten run second inning. Amber Faust opened the
scoring in the first with a two-RBI double. One inning later, the
Abbey sent 14 batters to the plate as the Crusaders scored ten runs
on ten hits. The Crusaders recieved a two RBI double from Amber
Faust, a two RBI single from Shannon Arthur, (in her second at bat
of the inning after she led off the frame), and RBI singles from
Shanie McConnell and Nikki Faust, and capped off by an RBI single
from Carol-Anne Sherrill. The other two runs came on Edinboro
errors.
One inning later, Courtney Barrineau delivered an RBI single to
move the lead to 13-0, and in the fourth, the Crusaders tacked on
three more courtesy of two Edinboro defensive miscues.
Edinboro scored two in the top of the fifth, but the game ended
there as the Abbey won by the run rule.
Samantha Jacobs worked the first four innings to get credited
with the win. She fanned six and allowed just one hit, throwing 80
pitches. Amanda Shields took the loss after giving up eight runs,
five earned, on eight hits in an inning and a third.
Sherrill and Hannah Bright both led the Crusaders with three
hits, while Amber Faust collected a pair while driving in four
runs. Sherrill, Barrineau, McConnell and Arthur each had two
RBI.
In game two, the Crusaders scored two runs in each of the first
two innings, added one more in the third and closed the game with
four in the fourth, three on a homer by Barrineau.
The Abbey opened the game with two in the first on an RBI single
from Amber Faust, and the other when Bright came home on an
error.
One inning later, Faust struck again, delivering a two RBI
single that chased home Bright and McConnell to raise the lead to
4-0. In the third it was McConnell's single to center that scored
Arthur that made the lead grow to 5-0.
Four more runs came across in the fourth, three on Barrineau's
first homer of the year, a blast to left center, that made the lead
5-0. Barrineau's round tripper is just the second of the year for
the Crusaders. The other run came was scored on a single by Bright
that plated Sherrill.
Catelyn Pressley was credited with the win after allowing just
two hits over four scoreless innings, striking out three. Kari Falk
took the loss after allowing nine runs, seven earned, on ten hits
in four innings. She walked seven and struck out one.
Sherrill, Bright and Amber Faust all had two hits for the
Crusaders, which finished with ten. Faust and Barrineau each drove
in three runs.
