Crusaders Take Two from Converse for Sixth Straight Win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Kennedy Teasley had four hits and drove in three runs and Casey Laing and Megan Towery homered, giving Belmont Abbey a sweep of Converse in Conference Carolinas softball action Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders won the opener 8-2 before taking the nightcap 5-3.

With its sixth straight victory, The Abbey improves to 18-16 overall and 10-6 in league play, while Converse falls to 9-29, 5-13. The Crusaders also remained one game behind North Greenville in the Northwest Division.

THE OPENER
  • Belmont Abbey jumped out to a 5-0 lead through three innings with two in the second and three in the third.
  • Teasley went 3-for-4 and scored twice. Her RBI single in the third made the score 5-0, Earlier in the frame Laing launched a two-run home run to right field.
  • Sienna Garcia earned the win to improve to 10-9, allowing one run on two hits over 4.0 innings. Torey Cagno also allowed two hits to earn her first career save.
THE NIGHTCAP
  • Belmont Abbey scored single runs in each of the first four innings for a 4-0 lead, starting with a home run by Towery..
  • The Crusaders manufactured its next three runs, capitalizing on errors. An error after an Allie Mayer single in the second and a bases-loaded walk by Teasley in the third. A sacrifice fly by Laing capped the run.
  • After Converse closed to within 4-3 in the fourth, Teasley had a run-scoring single in the seventh for some insurance.
  • Garcia also started game two, but was relieved by Erin Gill in the fourth. The senior ended the rally, then threw three scoreless frames to improve to 5-2. She did not walk a batter while striking out two.
  • Garcia had four Ks in the contest, passing 100 for the season.
UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey returns home to face another Northwest Division foe on Tuesday.
  • The Crusaders host Lees-McRae at 1 p.m. in the contest postponed from March 14.
