The Belmont Abbey softball team claimed a pair of wins at St.
Augustine this afternoon, taking the opener 8-2 and getting the
sweep with a 4-2 win in game two. The Crusaders improve to 6-14,
while St. Augustine drops to 5-5-1.
In the opener, Crusaders freshman pitcher Samantha Jacobs fanned
14 batters and walked just one, as she allowed two runs on five
hits in a complete-game effort.
The offense gave her the only runs she would need in the second
as Kaitlyn Jones scored on an error, and Shanie McConnell scored on
a bases loaded groundout by Carol-Anne Sherrill.
St. Augustine cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning,
but the Crusaders pulled away with two runs in the fifth as Hannah
Bright led off reaching on an error that allowed her to move to
second. She then stole third and scored when the throw sailed into
leftfield. Jones added another run when her groundout to second
plated Nikki Faust.
One inning later, the Abbey exploded for four runs on two hits,
with three of the runs coming on Bright's bases loaded double.
Nikki Faust's RBI groundout chased Bright home to widen the Abbey
lead to 8-1.
St. Augustine added another run in the bottom of the seventh to
close the scoring.
The Crusaders finished with seven hits as Shannon Arthur led the
way with two.
In game two, St. Augustine jumped ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the
first but the Abbey matched it in the top of the second as Arthur
singled home Amber Faust, who worked a leadoff walk.
Three innings later, the Abbey plated two more on an infield
single by Nikki Faust which increased the lead to 3-1.
St. Augustine closed the lead to 3-2 with a run in the fifth,
but the Crusaders scored an insurance run in the sixth on a Brooke
Baliles single to left center, scoring Arthur, to move the lead to
4-2.
Catelyn Pressley worked around a leadoff single in the bottom of
the seventh, as she struck out the side, to preserve the win.
Pressley earned the win after fanning seven in seven innings,
giving up two runs on six hits.
Arthur, Amber and Nikki Faust all had two hits as the Abbey
totaled nine on the day.
