The Belmont Abbey softball team dropped both games of a
doubleheader at Anderson this afternoon, losing the opener 2-0 and
falling 15-7 in five innings in the nightcap. Anderson improves to
15-1, while the Crusaders drop to 1-9.
In game one, Anderson scored both of its runs in the third
inning, using an Abbey throwing error and a sacrifice fly to score
twice.
The Crusaders had their best scoring chance in the sixth, as
Carol-Anne Sherrill led off with a double to right center, and was
replaced by Catelyn Presley. Hannah Bright sacrificed Presley to
third, but a popup and a foul out ended the threat.
Bailey Smith earned the win as she allowed two hits over seven
scoreless innings, fanning three and walking none. Nikki Faust was
charged with the loss after yielding two runs, one earned, on three
hits in three and two-thirds innings. She struck out three and
walked one. Samantha Jacobs struck out four and walked three in the
final two and one-thirds innings, allowing zero runs on two
hits.
Sherrill and Jena Reisanauer had both of the Abbey's hits.
In game two, Anderson scored four times in the bottom of the
first, but the Crusaders fired back with six runs on three hits in
the top of the second.
The Crusaders loaded the bases with one out, and Bright plated
Shannon Arthur with a fielder's choice. Amber Faust produced the
second run with a bases loaded walk, which was followed by a
two-run single by Becca Rothrock that knotted the game at four.
Faust scored the fifth run when she scored on a wild pitch and a
Kaitlyn Jones infield single scored Nikki Faust for the sixth
run.
Anderson trimmed the lead to one with a single run in the bottom
of the frame, and it added six more one inning later to take
control of the contest. The Trojans scored six runs on five hits.
One inning later they added four more to grab a 15-6 lead.
Down to its final three outs, the Crusaders needed two runs to
keep the game alive, but only scored one as Bright's RBI single
plated Shanie McConnell, who led off the frame with a single.
Lauren Bell earned the win as she allowed seven runs, six
earned, on eight hits in five innings. She walked four and fanned
three. Presley took the loss after giving up eight runs on seven
hits, walking five, in two and one-third of an inning.
Jones, McConnell and Amber Faust led the Abbey with two hits
apiece as the Crusaders totaled eight. Bright and Rothrock had
