The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team outscored North
Greenville 45-26 in the second half after trailing 38-32 at
halftime as the Lady Crusaders snapped a three-game losing streak
with a 77-64 win this evening at the Wheeler Center. The victory
evens the Abbey's record to 11-11 overall and 10-8 in Conference
Carolinas, while North Greenville slides to 8-14 overall and 6-12
in Conference Carolinas. The win gives the Abbey a season sweep of
the series.
Both teams shot very well in the first half, as North Greenville
posted a 53 percent output while the Abbey converted at a 52
percent clip. The second half, however was a different story, as
the Abbey shot a blistering 69 percent (18-26) from the floor while
North Greenville made just 10-28 (35.7).
North Greenville led by as many as 13 points, which came with
two minutes left in the first half, but the Abbey erased the
deficit in the final 20 minutes, as the North Greenville advantage
was only nine points at 47-38 with 15:06 to go.
The Abbey fought back with a 31-5 run over the next ten minutes
to capture a lead it would never lose again. The advantage rose to
as high as 14 points on two Candace Fox free throws with 1:36 to
play, which increased the Abbey's lead to 73-59.
From there, the deficit never dropped below 11 as the Abbey's
three game losing streak came to an end.
Belmont Abbey shot 60 percent from the field as McKenzie Owen
led four Crusaders in double figures with 16 points on eight of 11
shooting. Morgan Midkiff added 15, while Kiki Allen, one of four
seniors honored during Senior Night festivities, added a
career-high 12 points on five of seven shooting. Kelsey Long added
11.
North Greenville shot 45 percent as Timisty Nelson led all
scorers with 21 points. Ashleigh Edwards added 14, while Alisha
Hope and Jaquazha Barrino added 11 and 10, respectively.
