The Belmont Abbey men's basketball team lost 80-67 at King
College this evening in a Conference Carolinas matchup. King moves
to 10-1 overall and 5-0 in Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey
slips to 8-4 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Belmont Abbey scored the first six points of the game before a
14-1 King run gave the Tornado a lead they would never lose again.
King's lead ascended to as high as 17 at 44-27 with 1:05 to play,
and two Tyshawn Good free throws closed the scoring as the Tornado
carried a 44-29 lead into the break.
King maintained its double digit lead for most of the second
half before an Abbey run chopped the lead down to eight. Trailing
73-60 with 4:06 to play, the Crusaders scored the next five points,
using a layup from Chris Davis, a short jumper from Darryl Durham
and a free throw from Terrone Sheffey. Sheffey's free throw sliced
the King lead down to eight at 73-65 with 2:23 left, but the
Tornado scored seven of the game's final nine points, using a pair
of Logan Lyle three pointers and a free throw from Malcom St.
Louis, to push the lead back to 15. Good closed the scoring with
two free throws with 26 seconds left.
Good led all scorers with 24 points on nine of 21 shooting from
the field. He also sank six of seven from the free throw line. He
added six rebounds. Davis recorded a double double with 16 points
and a team-high ten rebounds. He also had five steals. Sheffey
added 14 points and Durham netted 11. The Abbey shot 37 percent
(22-58) from the floor but sank just three out of 17 from beyond
the arc.
Lyle led the Tornado with 21 points, while Eddie Piccinini added
16. Jason Seymore contributed 11 points and a game-high 11
rebounds. King shot 44 percent (30-67) from the field.
