Box Score Belmont Abbey freshmen Cassidy Coutinho and Meghan Philp
provided all of the scoring as the Crusaders women's soccer team
won their second-sraight match with a 2-1 win at Barton this
evening in the Conference Carolinas opener. The victory propels the
Abbey record to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas, while
Barton dips to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in Conference Carolinas.
After a scoreless first half, four Crusaders freshmen
contributed all of the points as Coutinho put the Abbey on top in
the 50th minute with her fourth goal in five matches, and her
third-sraight, as she found the back of the net after taking a pass
from Laura Shelton.
Six minutes later, Megan Nanney deposited a free kick to the
head of Philp, whose redirection beat Carson Moore for her first
collegiate goal.
Less than two minutes later Barton cut the lead in half as
Lindsay Rembecki scored when she deflected Emily Futral's free
kick, but the Crusaders defense did not allow another chance as
they held on for the win.
The Crusaders outshot the Bulldogs 17-5 and held a 5-1 edge in
corner kicks. Megan Bowen and Hannah Kohls split time in the net,
as Bowen did not make a save in the first half, while Kohls stopped
two shots in the final 45 minutes.
