Box Score 2 The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball team put the finishing
touches on a 4-0 weekend at the Firebird Volleyball Classic with a
pair of 3-0 wins today, dispatching Virginia State by scores of
25-7, 25-19 and 25-18. Later in the day, the Abbey defeated
Elizabeth City State by scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-8. The
Crusaders did not drop a set, going 12-0, in all four matches. The
Crusaders are 4-0 for the first time since the 2005 season.
In the opening match of the day, at 8:00 a.m. against Virginia
State, the Crusaders amassed a .306 attack behind Hannah
Schellenberg's nine kills. Caitlin Hankins hit a blistering .778,
knocking down seven kills with no errors on nine attacks. Angela
Jubb added seven kills and a block assist. Lydia Schellenberg
posted six kills with three service aces. Kay Schellenberg handed
out 35 assists and totaled nine digs.
The Abbey dug up 41 balls as Julianne Pisano led all players
with 11. Hankins controlled the net with three block assists and
Hannah Schellenberg added two more as the Crusaders totaled
four.
In the final match of the tournament the Crusaders hit .397 and
held Elizabeth City State to a negative attack (-.062), as it did
Bowie State yesterday. Jubb's nine kills led all players, recording
just one error on 14 total attacks (.571). Hankins continued her
strong start to her career, slamming down six kills on ten attacks
with no errors. In four matches, Hankins recorded 27 kills on 42
total attacks with just one error (.619). Hannah Schellenberg
posted seven kills and Tori Jensen logged six. Kay Schellenberg
posted 28 assists and six service aces.
Hannah Schellenberg recorded nine of the Abbey's 26 digs while
Kay Schellenberg and Remick Tiller had five each. Jubb totaled
three block assists.
The Abbey finished the tournament hitting .354 and held its four
opponents to a combined attack of -.003. It outdug its opponents
144-111 and amassed 46 service aces.
