The Belmont Abbey softball team was swept in a Conference
Carolinas doubleheader at King this afternoon, losing the opener
2-0 and dropping the nightcap 8-1. The Abbey is now 7-19 overall
and 1-3 in Conference Carolinas. King improves to 9-9 overall and
3-5 in Conference Carolinas.
"King played very well today," Head Coach Ellie Hanover said.
"We just didn't hit the ball today. Both games were very close. We
came out strong the second game but sat on one run and thats never
enough. We led most of that game until the fifth inning. We made
some bad decisions and the floodgates opened. Tomorrow is a new
day. It's another opportunity to play the game."
In the opener, King scored single runs in the first and second
innings and held off a seventh inning Abbey charge to earn the win.
In the top of the seventh, Carol-Anne Sherrill lined a one out
single to center. After a strikeout, Kinsey McClure moved Sherrill
to second with a single to center. With the go-ahead runner at the
plate, a fielder's choice ended the game.
Hannah Light earned the win as she scattered three hits, two in
the seventh inning, in a complete-game effort. She struck out
three. Nikki Faust was charged with the loss after yielding two
runs on eight hits in six innings, striking out four.
Sherrill had two hits for the Abbey, and McClure had the
other.
In game two the Crusaders scored the game's first run in the top
of the first as Sherrill led off the game with a single. She moved
to second on Chelsea Elmore's bunt single. After a pitching change,
McClure loaded the bases when she drew a walk. Shannon Arthur
followed with a flyout, but it was deep enough for Sherrill to
score to put the Crusaders ahead.
Emily Self kept the Tornado off the board but escaped two jams,
including the bottom of the fourth when King pieced together three
hits but did not score. King broke through in the fifth as it
scored six runs on six hits. It would add two more in the sixth
inning to seal the win.
Rachel Wilmoth improved her record to 6-4 as she allowed one run
on five hits, striking out one, in five innings. Self took the loss
after giving up four runs on eight hits in four and two-thirds
innings, fanning one.
Sherrill had two of the Abbey's seven hits, as she totaled four
in the doubleheader.
