The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team fell at Barton 72-58
in the quarterfinal round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament.
The Abbey ends its season with a record of 12-16.
The Crusaders led for most of the first half as their lead rose
to as high as seven points at 26-19 on a Paula Regalado layup with
5:25 to play in the half. Barton countered by scoring the next
eight straight points to grab a 27-26 lead at the 2:25 mark. A free
throw by Candace Fox tied the game, but a Barton layup with 1:53
showing moved the Lady Bulldogs back on top. Kelsey Long tied the
game at 29, the last of her nine points of the night, with 36
seconds left to tie the game at 29 at the half.
In the second half Barton shot 46 percent from the field as it
outscored the Abbey 43-29 in the final 20 minutes. After Regalado
scored the first points of the half on a layup, Barton responded
with a 14-3 run over the next five minutes to claim a lead it would
never relinquish. The final points of the flurry moved the cushion
to 11 points, but the Crusaders fought back with a 10-5 run, capped
off by a Fox jumper, sliced the lead to six at 50-44 with 8:46 to
go.
Barton pushed the lead back to eight, but again the Abbey fought
back, going on a 4-1 mini-run, fueled by a Regalado layup and two
Fox free throws to cut the lead to five at 53-48 with 6:41
showing.
From there, Barton pulled away for good, closing the game on a
19-10 run to earn a 72-58 win.
Regalado, in her final collegiate game, posted a double double
with 15 points and 10 rebounds as she closes her career with 859
career points. Melisa Foures led the Abbey with 16 points. The
Abbey shot 43 percent from the field.
Barton was led by Faith Hunter and Jannetta Robinson, who both
totaled 16 points. Jolanda Mitchell added 13 and Nyesha Willie
posted 12.
