After dropping the first set, the Belmont Abbey women's
volleyball team claimed three straight to earn a key 3-1 road win
at the Western Division leading Erskine Flying Fleet this afternoon
in the regular season finale for both teams. Set scores were 17-25,
25-20, 26-24 and 25-14. The Abbey, winners of five straight, close
out the regular season with a record of 23-4 overall and 14-2 in
Conference Carolinas, while Erskine slides to 15-12 overall and
13-3 in Conference Carolinas.
Belmont Abbey has clinched at least the two seed in the East for
next week's Conference Carolinas Tournament, and will host a first
round match on Saturday, November 10 at 2:00 p.m.
The Crusaders hit just .163 in the opening set, but posted a
.220 and better in the final three sets as it overcame the early
deficit. Four Crusaders reached double figures in kills, led by
freshman Hannah Schellenberg's match-high 16. She also had 12 digs.
Sister Lydia Schellenberg recorded 15 kills and 15 digs, while
senior Angela Jubb and freshman Caitlin Hankins both totaled ten
kills. Tori Jensen posted eight kills as she registered a .389
attack, as she had just one error on 18 total attacks. She also had
four assists. Senior Kay Schellenberg, the oldest of the three
sisters, handed out 48 assists.. She also had nine digs. Jubb
posted ten digs and along with Jensen, had two block assists.
Erskine hit .236 as Lauren Stewart led the Fleet with 14 kills
and Caitlin Bullock totaled 12. Bailey Thornton led all players
with 24 digs as the Fleet finished with 76.
