The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball team advanced to Saturday's
Conference Carolinas Championship match with a 3-1 win at Western
Division Champion Erskine College this evening in Due West. Set
scores were 25-20, 16-25, 25-18 and 25-17. The Abbey will go on the
road to face Queens, a team that handed the Abbey both of its
conference losses during the regular season. The win ups the
Abbey's record to 25-4, while Erskine ends its season with a mark
of 16-13.
Belmont Abbey advances to the title match for the first time in
school history, and the winner of Saturday's match will earn an
automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
The Crusaders hit .259 as three players reached double figures
in kills, led by Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year Hannah
Schellenberg's 17. Lydia Schellenberg added 12 and Caitlin Hankins
added 11. Both Hannh and Lydia Schellenberg posted double doubles,
as Lydia totaled 17 and Hannah recorded 15 to go along with four
aces. Oldest sister Kay Schellenberg, the 2012 Conference Carolinas
Player of the Year, handed out 47 assists and posted 15 digs.
Angela Jubb added nine kills and two service aces. She also posted
eight digs and three total blocks, as did Tori Jensen, who
contributed six kills offensively. Libero Julianne Pisano added 16
digs as the Crusaders dominated the digs battle by an 83-62
count.
Belmont Abbey and Queens shared both the Conference Carolinas
overall and divisional titles but Queens earned the top seed by
virute of its two wins in the regular season. Both of the regular
season matches went five sets.
