Men's Soccer Ends Season With 2-1 Loss At Limestone In Conference Tournament Quarterfinal

10/30/2012 12:00:00 AM

Box Score

The seventh-seeded Belmont Abbey men's soccer team was narrowly edged by the second-seeded Limestone College Saints in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 Conference Carolinas Tournament. The Crusaders scored first in the fifth minute, but the Saints scored two unanswered goals, the last coming with under nine minutes left, to advance to the semifinal round as they improve to 11-5-1, while the Abbey ends its season with a mark of 6-10.

Belmont Abbey jumped ahead quickly, as senior Josh Koerner scored for the first time this season as he corralled a failed Limestone clear and found himself one on one with goalkeeper Tom Godfrey, whom he beat to put the Abbey on top.

The Crusaders maintained their lead through most of the first half and appeared to carry their edge into the break, but Limestone's Larry Mahon got control of a loose ball and fired a low shot past Philip Bru with just six seconds left in the half to deadlock the game at one.

In the second half the two teams battled for control but the best scoring chances came late. At the 78:38 mark, Jose Penaloza nearly gave the Abbey the lead when his shot caromed off of the crossbar, and just under three minutes later, Limestone scored the winning goal.

Benjamin Morande sent a through ball past the Abbey defense, to the far right side of the box, where Sam Orritt blasted a cross shot to the far post, past Bru, for his sixth goal of the year and send Limestone into the semifinal round.

Limestone held a 14-7 edge in shots and both teams attempted four corner kicks. Bru and Godfrey both stopped two shots.
