Belmont Abbey freshmen Hannah Schellenberg and Caitlin Hankins
recorded 13 and 12 kills, respectively, as the Crusaders women's
volleyball team reached 20 wins for the first time in school
history with a 3-0 sweep of the visiting Barton Bulldogs this
evening at the Wheeler Center. Set scores were 25-18, 25-18 and
25-20. The win moves the Abbey's record to 20-4 overall and 11-2 in
Conference Carolinas, while Barton drops to 7-16 overall and 4-9 in
Conference Carolinas.
The 11 conference wins ties the school record for most in a
year, which was set by the 2010 team. The 20 increases the school
record, which was originally 18 set by the last two Abbey teams. 22
of the Abbey's 24 matches have been decided by 3-0 scores.
Belmont Abbey hit .317 for the match as Schellenberg posted 13
kills and 11 digs. Hankins added 12 kills, including nine on her
first nine attacks. She hit .750 for the match, posting 12 kills on
16 attacks with no errors. She added two total blocks. Schellenberg
hit .520 as she did not post an error on 25 total attacks. Angela
Jubb added seven kills and Tori Jensen posted six. Setter Kay
Schellenberg handed out 41 assists and posted a service ace.
The Abbey defense outdug Barton 46-42 as Hannah Schellenberg's
11 led the Crusaders. Lydia Schellenberg posted ten. Jubb and
Julianne Pisano posted eight each. Of the Abbey's six total blocks
Jubb posted four, all assisted, while Jensen and Kay Schellenberg
both finished with two each.
Barton hit .139 for the match as Kati Wood and Melissa Cochran
both led the Bulldogs with ten each. Wood added a match-high 15
digs.
