Box Score The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team suffered a 3-2 road loss at
Erskine this evening in a crucial Conference Carolinas match. The
contest was tied 1-1 at the half, but Erskine's Ross Henderson
scored the winning goal just six minutes after Mauricio Lopez tied
the match at two as the Flying Fleet moves to 7-6-3 overall and
6-2-1 in Conference Carolinas. The Abbey drops to 6-8-0 overall and
4-5-0 in Conference Carolinas.
With one match left to play, Saturday at home against Pfeiffer,
the Abbey can be no higher than a six seed in next week's
Conference Carolinas Tournament.
Both teams found the back of the net once in the first half as
Erskine outshot the Abbey 9-5 as Trevor Moreland put the Fleet
ahead in the 26th minute. Eight minutes later, Conor Wells netted
his team-leading fifth goal of the year with an unassisted marker
to knot the match at one.
The contest stayed tied at one until the 52nd minute when
Erskine surged ahead on a Marco Borsetto goal, but nine minutes
later, Lopez scored off of a feed from Ross Smith to get the Abbey
level with 27 minutes left. Nine minutes later, however, Henderson
broke the tie for good when he scored off of a corner kick
from Jonathan Rutter to put the Fleet ahead for good at 3-2.
Erskine outshot the Abbey 14-13 and held a 9-6 edge in corner
kicks. Philip Bru stopped six shots.
