Box Score

The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team suffered a 3-2 road loss at Erskine this evening in a crucial Conference Carolinas match. The contest was tied 1-1 at the half, but Erskine's Ross Henderson scored the winning goal just six minutes after Mauricio Lopez tied the match at two as the Flying Fleet moves to 7-6-3 overall and 6-2-1 in Conference Carolinas. The Abbey drops to 6-8-0 overall and 4-5-0 in Conference Carolinas.

With one match left to play, Saturday at home against Pfeiffer, the Abbey can be no higher than a six seed in next week's Conference Carolinas Tournament.

Both teams found the back of the net once in the first half as Erskine outshot the Abbey 9-5 as Trevor Moreland put the Fleet ahead in the 26th minute. Eight minutes later, Conor Wells netted his team-leading fifth goal of the year with an unassisted marker to knot the match at one.

The contest stayed tied at one until the 52nd minute when Erskine surged ahead on a Marco Borsetto goal, but nine minutes later, Lopez scored off of a feed from Ross Smith to get the Abbey level with 27 minutes left. Nine minutes later, however, Henderson broke the tie for good when he scored off of a corner kick from Jonathan Rutter to put the Fleet ahead for good at 3-2.

Erskine outshot the Abbey 14-13 and held a 9-6 edge in corner kicks. Philip Bru stopped six shots.
