Box Score The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss at the
Wingate Bulldogs this evening in a battle of Southeast Regional
opponents. Wingate moves to 9-3, while the Abbey slips to 6-6.
Wingate got on the board early as Gui Andrade scored his
second goal of the year on a penalty kick in the fifth minute. That
was all of the scoring through the first half.
Early in the second half the Bulldogs extended their lead to 2-0
as Gui Lima scored on a redirected shot off of a corner kick, but
the Abbey quickly cut the lead in half just four minutes later.
Senior Ross Smith outran the Wingate defense and ran down a long
pass and was left with a one one one with goalkeeper Daniel
DeGraff, whom he beat for his first goal of the year.
Belmont Abbey turned up the pressure as it looked for the
game-tying goal, but Wingate gained an insurance goal at the 67:57
mark as Liam Gillesphey scored on a rebound of a shot that hit the
post for his second goal of the year.
Wingate outshot the Abbey 15-3 and both teams attempted five
corner kicks. Jordan Junot made a pair of saves and DeGraff also
had two stops.
