10/10/2012 12:00:00 AM

Box Score

Coker's Nikko Tirkkonen scored the only goal of the match in the 85th minute to break a scoreless tie as the Cobras earned a 1-0 win over the Belmont Abbey men's soccer team this afternoon at Alumni Field. The win ups the Coker record to 8-3-0 overall and 4-1-0 in Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey drops to 6-5-0 overall and 4-2-0 in Conference Carolinas.

The Crusaders outshot Coker 15-7 and both teams attempted four corner kicks, but only Tirkkonen found the back of the net, which came at the 84:49 mark. Matt Taylor sent a cross from the right side, where Tirkkonen redirected the ball with his head past Philip Bru for the only goal of the match.

Belmont Abbey had several scoring chances, mainly in the first half as Jay Nazari sent a laser from 30 yards out that James Sweeney just tipped over the crossbar. About ten minutes later, Jose Penaloza had the same scoring chance from the same spot, but again Sweeney tipped the ball over the bar.

Conor Wells had a solid chance midway through the second half, but his shot sailed just to the right of the far post.

Bru made one save, while Sweeney stopped six shots.
