The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team fell to Wingate 2-1 in double overtime this afternoon at Alumni Field. Wingate moves to 2-1, while the Abbey drops to 1-2.

The two teams were battled to a draw through the first 82 minutes. Wingate outshot the Abbey 22-5 and held a 16-1 advantage in corner kicks, and the Bulldogs played with a man advantage in the final 47 minutes after an Abbey red card.

Belmont Abbey looked to score the only goal of the match in the 83rd minute as Timmi Borges Da Silva scooted down the right side and scooted a perfectly weighted pass to the center of the box, where John Dandanell one-timed the blast home to put the Crusaders ahead 1-0.

The lead lasted exactly two minutes, as Wingate struck back to tie the game at the 84:20 mark. A Crusader foul just outside of the penalty box set up a free kick for Felippe Imperatriz. Imperatriz's attempt sailed over the Abbey wall, dipped and clipped the right post and caromed just over the line on the left side of the net to knot the contest at one.

That was all of the scoring through the rest of regulation and the first ten minute overtime period. The match looked like it was headed for a tie, but the Bulldogs scored the golden goal with just 1:35 left.

Wingate's Gui Lima blasted a shot that was saved by Louis Liberatore, but his save rebounded right to Zach Muchuca, who one-timed the carom into the empty net for the goal.
