The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team scored two first half goals
and added another in the final 45 minutes as the Crusaders earned
their first win of the 2011 season with a 3-0 shutout of the
visiting Brevard College Tornados this afternoon at Alumni Field.
The win evens the Abbey's record to 1-1, while Brevard dips to
0-2.
The Crusaders outshot the Tornados 12-6, including 9-1 in the
first half as the scoring began in the 23rd minute. After a Brevard
foul and ensuing yellow card, Jack Reid set up a free kick just to
the left of the box, 23 yards from goal. He sent a line drive to
the front of the box, where Kyle Searles beat his mark and headed
home the winner.
Five minutes later, the Crusaders struck again, as Conor Wells
got behind the Tornados defense and fired a shot that goalkeeper
Pauli Jussila swatted away, but his carom went directly to the feet
of Timmi Borges Da Silva, who one-timed a laser into the empty net
to double the lead to 2-0.
That was all of the scoring until the 73rd minute when Borges Da
Silva connected with Josh Drew. Borges Da Silva settled a high pass
in the right side of the Tornados goal and sent a weighted
through-ball to Drew, who fired from the penalty spot past Jussila
into the lower left corner of the net for the score.
