The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss at Catawba this evening. Both teams are now 3-4 on the year. Valentin Nava scored both of the Indians goals.

After a scoreless first half, Nava got the Indians in front with two goals in a span of a minute and 12 seconds just before the hour. He was twice freed on breakaways, the first from Spencer Preston and the second from Carson Smith.

On Nava's first goal in the 55th minute, he raced onto a long through ball from Preston, fought past a defender, and scored from a sharp angle on the right side just inside the far post. Smith would also free Nava on a breakaway where he also scored from the same sharp right angle.

Belmont Abbey had several opportunities to cut into the margin, the first on a penalty kick in the 66th minute, but Jack Reid sent the shot off the crossbar and the Indians cleared. Catawba keeper Evan Harvey then made two saves to keep the sheet clean.

Just 30 seconds after the penalty kick, a free kick by Kyle Searles from 25 yards out was tipped over the bar by Harvey. The last Crusader chance came 10 minutes from time when Harvey parried away a shot from Conor Wells to the side.

Harvey made four saves for Catawba in posting the shutout. The Indians held a 14-6 edge in shots. Sergio Ramirez started in goal for the Crusaders and had two saves over 65 minutes. Jordan Junot stopped three shots over the final 25 minutes.
