The Belmont Abbey volleyball team used two late rallies in sets
two and three to claim a 3-0 sweep over the visiting Mount Olive
College Trojans this afternoon at the Wheeler Center in Conference
Carolinas action. Set scores were 25-19, 26-24 and 25-23. The
Abbey, winners of two-straight, move to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in
Conference Carolinas, while Mount Olive drops to 4-6 overall and
1-2 in Conference Carolinas.
After a relatively easy set one win, the Abbey trailed 23-18
late in set two, but the Crusaders ran off six-straight points to
grab a 24-23 edge. The Crusaders used two kills by Stefanie Holler
and a pair of service aces by Molly Gwaltney, the second of which
tied the set at 23. Holler followed with another score to give the
Abbey its first lead since 17-16.
A kill by Mount Olive's Erika Conner momentarily knotted the set
at 24, but an ensuing service error, followed by a Lydia
Schellenberg knockdown, ended the set to give the Abbey a 2-0
lead.
In the third, the Trojans led 17-12 before the Crusaders claimed
eight of the next 11 points, capped off by a Holler kill, to move
the Abbey in front 21-20. The Trojans won the next two points on a
kill from Carly White and an Abbey attack error, but another kill
from Holler, and an error from Mount Olive, pushed the Abbey back
ahead 23-22.
White kept the Trojan hopes alive with a kill to deadlock the
frame at 23, but a Bria James kill on the next sideout gave the
Abbey match point. Heather Wagner's serve was true, but it was
misplayed on the Mount Olive end with a ball handling error to end
the contest.
Holler and Angela Jubb both led the Crusaders with ten kills
apiece. Jubb posted ten kills with just two errors on 23 total
attacks (.348) while adding four digs, three service aces and three
block assists. Holler hit a torrid .571, posting ten kills with two
errors on 14 total attacks. She added a pair of digs. Gwaltney
handed out 19 assists and had three service aces. Kay Schellenberg
added 13 assists. Lydia Schellenberg tied for the match high with
11 digs.
Mount Olive was led by White's match-high 17 kills. Conner added
12. Destiny Ma'ave-Kuewa handed out 38 assists and posted five
digs. Lauren Lee led Mount Olive with 11 digs as it won that
category by a 33-28 count.
