The Belmont Abbey softball team, playing its first home
doubleheader since February 26, was swept in a Conference Carolinas
doubleheader by the visiting Mount Olive College Trojans by scores
of 2-0 and 5-0. The Abbey is now 7-15 overall and 2-4 in Conference
Carolinas, while Mount Olive moves to 14-17 overall and 3-1 in
Conference Carolinas. Today's games were Strike Out Cancer Day, as
the Abbey Softball program collected donations for the Kay Yow
Fund. The Abbey wore pink jersies during today's games.
"Today was just disappointing," Head Coach Ellie Hanover said.
"There is not much you can say. Mount Olive came ready to play. We
did not play up to our potential. Our pitchers threw well and our
offense couldn't get started. You can't win many games when you
don't score runs. We definitely have the talent to do better. I
hope that we get back on track soon."
In the opener, the Trojans scored first in the top of the
second, getting the only run they would need. Robbin Kennedy led
off with a double and moved to third on a groundout by Aubrey
Reinhard. After Courtney Bell was hit by a pitch, Katie Moore
singled home Kennedy for the game's first run.
Neither team threatened again until the sixth when Mount Olive
added an insurance run. Alyssa Bradshaw led off with a single and
Bell came in to pinch run. Moore moved Bell to second on a
groundout, and Katie Smith sacrificed her to third. Centerfielder
Anna Munizza then ripped a single to score Bell to widen the lead
to 2-0.
Mount Olive went down in order in the top of the seventh, and
the Abbey threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the ininng.
Kristin Ware entered the game in relief of Carly White and gave up
a leadoff pinch hit single to Kinsey McClure, who was then replaced
by Kelly Schweizer. Carol-Anne Sherrill followed with a single to
right, moving Schweizer to second. Becca Rothrock, representing the
go-ahead run, hit a sharp ground ball to third, where Smith stepped
on third to cancel Schweizer and then fired across the diamond to
cut down Rothrock for a double play. A strikeout ended the
game.
White earned the win in six scoreless innings, giving up just
one hit and striking out one. Ware picked up the save. Sami
Michaelis took the loss. She yielded two runs on seven hits in
seven innings, fanning two.
In game two, the contest was scoreless until Mount Olive plated
one in the fourth as Kelly Minshew led off with a double to left
center, was sacrificed to third by Danille Mitchell, and scored on
a single by Kennedy.
Two innings later, the margin grew to 3-0 as Kennedy and
Reinhard produced RBI singles. One inning later, Mount Olive closed
the scoring with two runs, taking advantage of two Abbey errors to
make the score 5-0. The Abbey went down in order in the bottom of
the seventh.
Sarah Saunders earned the win in a complete game effort, tossing
a three-hit shutout with five strikeouts and one walk. Emily Self
was charged with the loss. She allowed five runs, three earned, on
eight hits in seven innings.
