Sheffey & Council Set Career-Highs In Men's Basketball's 90-80 Win At Brevard

Belmont Abbey junior guards Jay Council and Terrone Sheffey broke their single-game scoring highs with 28 and 24 points, respectively, as the Crusaders men's basketball team earned a 90-80 win at Brevard this afternoon. The Crusaders, which has scored at least 90 points in five of six games this season, move to 4-2, while Brevard drops to 0-7.

The Abbey which overcame a 14-point deficit in the first half, took the first lead of the game on Tyshawn Good's jumper 11 seconds into the game and traded baskets with Brevard for the first few minutes of the game. A 10-0 Brevard run with the Abbey trailing by four at the 12:19 mark gave the Tornados a 30-16 lead with 9:42 left in the half. The Crusaders outscored Brevard 23-12 to finish the half and trailed by only three at 42-39.

A Council steal to start the second half led to a Kyle Phillips jumper which cut the Abbey deficit to one. Sheffey's jumper with 17:30 left in the game gave the Crusaders their first lead since two minutes into the game. Two Brevard free throws gave moved its lead back to one point 29 seconds later. Good's jumper at 16:41 started an 8-0 Abbey run that gave it a 52-44 lead. A 12-4 Brevard run resulted in 56-56 tie with 9:23 to play, but an 8-0 Crusader spurt gave them a 64-56 lead that they would not relinquish. The Abbey never led by less than four the remainder of the way in the 90-80 victory.

Council led the way for the Crusaders recording a double double with team highs in points with 28 and rebounds with ten. His previous single game best was 24 points, which he scored last Tuesday. He sank nine of 12 field goals and eight of his nine free throw attempts. Sheffey added 24 points, dished out team high eight assists, and grabbed seven rebounds. He eclipsed his previous best by one point, which he set on November 20, 2010 against Barton. Good chipped in with a 16 point effort. The Abbey shot 54 percent (31-57) from the field.
