Belmont Abbey senior midfielder Rebecca Mateo and sophomore
forward Ananda Gebreyesus both scored two goals, while senior
midfielder Nicole Voets and freshman forward Simone Melvin added
another as the Crusaders women's soccer team earned their
third-straight win with a 6-0 shutout of the visiting Converse
Valkyries this afternoon before a homecoming crowd of 415. The
Crusaders move to 7-6-1 overall and 6-1 in Conference Carolinas,
while Converse drops to 0-11-1 overall and 0-7-0 in Conference
Carolinas.
The Crusaders scored five of their goals in the second half as
it outshot Converse 24-1 in the contest. Gebreyesus gave the Abbey
an early lead in the 13th minute with an assist from Nicole
Voets.
That was all of the scoring until the 60th minute when Mateo
struck for the first time sending home a shot off of a corner kick
to extend the lead to 2-0. Less than three minutes later,
Gebreyesus struck again with an unassisted tally to move the edge
to 3-0.
Six minutes later, Mateo struck again for her sixth goal in the
last three matches, burying a shot from the top of the box at the
68:07 mark.
Voets made it 5-0 at the 76:36 mark with a header goal, and
Melvin closed the scoring at the 79:07 mark with a 25-yard laser
for her first career goal.
In addition to the shots edge, the Crusaders took all nine
corner kicks in the contest.
