The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team scored two goals in the
first nine minutes and added two more goals later in the match as
the Crusaders women's soccer team earned a 4-1 win at Coker this
afternoon in Conference Carolinas action. The win ups the Abbey's
ledger to 10-7-0 overall and 9-2-0 in Conference Carolinas, while
Coker drops to 1-15-1 overall and 1-9-1 in Conference
Carolinas.
Senior midfielder Nicole Voets scored two of the Abbey's four
goals, tallying the first and last goals of the match. Her first
strike came just 5:17 in as she scored off on a bouncing ball that
was rebounded off of defenders.
3:01 later, sophomore forward Ananda Gebreyesus beat Lizz Morris
with a high acing shot from the top of the 18 yard box to widen the
lead to 2-0.
Coker pulled one back ten minutes later as Sarah Rountree headed
home a Cassie Callahan free kick to cut the Abbey lead in half, but
the Crusaders answered just three minutes before halftime, as
Rebecca Mateo sent a cross that Alexa Hale one-timed past Morris
for the goal.
Voets closed the scoring in the 62nd minute as she buried a
penalty kick to close the scoring.
The Crusaders outshot Coker 16-2 and registered all four corner
kicks in the match.
Morris collected seven saves, while Simone Melvin, usually a
forward, played all 90 minutes in the net and made one save.
