The Belmont Abbey volleyball team extinguished a 20-10 set one
deficit, setting the tone for the rest of the match as the
Crusaders fought off a valiant effort by North Greenville to earn a
3-1 win this evening at the Wheeler Center. Set scores were 28-26,
25-14, 24-26 and 26-24. The win ups the Abbey's ledger to 11-10
overall and 6-4 in Conference Carolinas, while North Greenville
drops to 10-12 overall and 2-8 in Conference Carolinas.
North Greenville began the opening set by racing out to a 20-10
lead, but the Crusaders clawed back by winning the next nine
unanswered points to move to within one at 20-19. North Greenville
won the next two points to extend their cushion to 22-19. After an
Abbey point, North Greenville answered with two straight points to
move to 24-20, but the Crusaders fought off four straight set
points by earning four straight points, using two kills and two
North Greenville attack errors to knot the set at 24. Remick Tiller
followed with a service ace to create a match point for the Abbey,
but a Rebakah Mayes kill deadlocked the frame again, but that was
followed by three-straight North Greenville errors to punctuate the
Abbey's remarkable comeback and take a 1-0 lead.
After an easy 25-14 set two win for Belmont Abbey, North
Greenville forced a fourth set with a 26-24 win in set three. In
the fourth set, the biggest lead was five points at 21-16 in favor
of North Greenville, but the Abbey again fought back, cutting a
22-18 deficit into a 23-23 tie by winning five of the next seven
points, capped off by a ball handling error by North Greenville. A
knockdown by Stefanie Holler set up match point for the Crusaders,
but it was answered by a kill from North Greenville. On the next
point Holler recorded her tenth and final kill, setting up match
point again, and Belmont Abbey capped off the win with a North
Greenville attack error.
Angela Jubb led all players with 18 kills on 33 total attacks
and seven errors (.333) and Holler finished with ten. Molly
Gwaltney handed out 43 assists and finished with ten digs. Bria
James registered six kills but led all players with a career-best
24 digs as the Abbey won that battle 68-60. Jaimee O'Connell posted
five block assists and one block solo to go along with six kills.
The Crusaders recorded 11 total blocks on the night. The offense
compiled a .151 hitting percentage.
Kaitlyn Pierce led North Greenville with 11 kills and ten digs.
Abigail Frame handed out 32 assists. Mayes led all players with
seven service aces. North Greenville registered a .040 attack.
