Box score
Belmont Abbey junior midfielder Jack Reid scored the only goal
of the match on a penalty kick in the 54th minute, and goalkeeper
John Max Bolling stopped a Catawba penalty kick in the 58th minute
and stopped a point blank shot with two seconds left as the
Crusaders earned a 1-0 win over the visiting Indians this afternoon
at Alumni Field. The Abbey improves to 1-2, while Catawba falls to
2-1.
After a scoreless first half, the Abbey notched the only goal of
the match in the 54th minute as forward Timmi Borges Da Silva was
pulled down in the box to draw a penalty kick, which Reid buried
for a 1-0 lead. The Crusaders have taken and scored on three
penalty kicks in as many matches to start the season.
Four minutes later, Catawba's Carson Smith was knocked down in
the box and was awarded a penalty kick. His attempt towards the
right side of the goal was met by Bolling, who swatted away the
offering to preserve the shutout.
From there, both teams had plenty of scoring chances, and
Catawba mustered one final chance as it fired a corner kick with 42
seconds left that sailed towards the back post, where Jonas Nader
was all alone, but Bolling deflected his tying effort over the line
as time expired.
Catawba outshot the Crusaders 13-11 and held a 6-5 edge in
corner kicks. Bolling made six saves in the net, and counterpart
Luke McCarthy scooped up three saves.
Belmont Abbey is back in action Saturday at 4:00 p.m. when it
hosts Coker.
