The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team erased a 1-0 halftime lead
by scoring three unanswered goals in the second half to claim a 3-1
win at Queens this evening at Marion Diehl Park. The Abbey moves to
3-4-2 overall and 2-1-1 in Conference Carolinas, while the Royals
drop to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in Conference Carolinas.
The Abbey outshot the Royals 13-11, including 9-8 in the first
half, but Queens jumped ahead 1-0 early in the match as Jeremy
Chambers scored on a deflected shot just 2:21 into the match.
Queens maintained its lead throughout the first half and into
the early moments of the second half until the Abbey knotted the
contest at one in the 63rd minute. Stuart Kirk dribbled down the
right side and sent a cross into the box, right to Ross Smith,
whose finish found the back of the net to tie the game at one.
1:52 later, the Abbey went ahead for good as Gianluca D'Agata
sent a through ball to Mauricio Lopez. Lopez got behind the Royals
defense and beat Queens goalkeeper Simen Walmann on a one-on-one
for his first goal of the year.
Jose Penaloza added an insurance goal in the 89th minute, firing
home a rebounded shot to put the finishing touches on the Abbey
win.
