Belmont Abbey freshman guard Jay Council scored a career-high 23
points, but Queens's Daniel Bailey broke a 97-97 tie with two free
throws with one second left in overtime as the Royals earned a
Conference Carolinas win this evening at the Grady Cole Center.
Queens improves to 10-11 overall and 7-7 in Conference Carolinas,
while the Abbey drops to 11-9 overall and 7-7 in Conference
Carolinas.
Council led five Crusaders in double figures with 23 points on
eight of 11 shooting from the field. He narrowly missed his first
career double double by grabbing nine rebounds, five on the
offensive glass. He also had two steals and an assist. Junior guard
Richard Barbee posted 22 points on seven of 12 shooting from the
field, an made all eight of his free throw attempts. He added eight
rebounds and three assists. Kyle Phillips posted 18 points and
seven rebounds, while Patrick Kuhlman and Chad Patus both finished
with 12 points. Patus notched a double double with 12 rebounds,
while Kuhlman finished with three assists.
Bailey led all scorers with 29 points, one of six Royals to
reach double figures. Sean Eads and Reggie Hopkins both had 13
points, while Andre Lockhart posted 12. Devon Seaford and Antonio
Stabler each chipped in with 11 apiece.
Queens led 48-43 at the half, but the Abbey outscored the Royals
49-44 in the second stanza to force an extra five minutes, in which
Queens outscored the Crusaders 7-5.
Both teams shot exactly 48.6 percent for the contest, with each
team finishing 35-72 shooting from the field. Queens converted 22
of 29 free throws to the Abbey's 19-30. The Crusaders won the
rebounding edge 47-34.
