The fourth-seeded Belmont Abbey men's soccer team and the
fifth-seeded Pfeiffer Falcons battled to a 0-0 draw in the
quarterfinal round of the 2010 Conference Carolinas Tournament, but
the Falcons will advance by virtue of a 2-1 win in penalty kicks.
The match goes down as a draw, as Pfeiffer moves to 4-7-5 and will
advance to face the winner of the Lees-McRae/Queens match, while
the Abbey ends its season with a record of 10-6-3.
The Abbey won the statistical battle, outshooting Pfeiffer 21-13
and holding a 10-3 edge in corner kicks, but Falcons goaltender
Alex Moreno stopped nine Abbey shots, including a penalty kick in
the second half. He would later make three more saves in the
shootout.
Belmont Abbey had its best chance to score in the 81st minute as
Timmi Borges DaSilva was pulled down in the penalty area, but
Moreno blocked the Aaron Weldon penalty kick.
The Abbey had one final chance to end the match in the second
overtime, as Stuart Kirk let fly a shot with two seconds left, from
25 yards out, that Moreno tipped over the bar.
In the shootout, the Abbey drew first and the shot by Jose
Penaloza was saved. Pfeiffer's Nick Brindley found the back of the
net on his attempt to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. After a miss by
Matt Dolan, Moreno and Abbey goalkeeper Louis Liberatore combined
to save the next three shots.
Gianluca D'Agata beat Moreno to knot the shootout at one, and
Fahret Salihovic gave the Falcons a 2-1 lead. Needing a successful
kick to keep the shootout going, Moreno blocked Kirk to give the
Falcons a 2-1 shootout win.
